Helsinki Central Library Oodi: storia di un travolgente successo
After opening on 5 December, the new Helsinki Central Library has attracted in average 12 000 visitors per day. The evaluations by both ordinary people, library colleagues, architects and other visitors have been praising.
Nearly all elements of success were planned and even tested – the popularity is not an accident. E.g. a new family library concept was developed for Oodi: instead of children’s department there are two areas dedicated for families. An essential point is the participatory planning process: the users were included in the planning from the very beginning, and they thank by loving the new library. Further, a set of good partnerships inside the building and with neighbouring cultural institutions were developed. A very important element has been the good co-operation with the competition winner ALA Architects, who really understood the idea of a modern public library. The testbed for many new Oodi concepts was the small but centrally located Library 10, now closed.
The only major problem is positive: the house is too popular, and the library must fight to get empty shelves equipped with books again and again, to keep the library clean enough and to maintain the staff capacity in the intensive working environment. Oodi has its’ own staff of 54 members. However, at the moment the work in the whole Helsinki City Library is organised in a way allowing every library professional interested in working in the Oodi library for a while to really do so.
